How Bone Broth Helped Me to Heal My Hormones
What is your initial reaction when you hear the words “bone broth”? Maybe your mouth starts salivating. Maybe you bring forth a memory from your childhood when you were sick eating chicken soup. Or maybe your like most people and get a weird look on your face of disgust…..To be fair I totally get it, if I did not grow up the way I did (my Dad was a hunt guide and so we always had weird crap simmering in our house) I would probably think the same. I mean after all its the picture of bones, simmering, in a pot…..eeekkkkkk! BUT regardless of that mental image or what you think of bone broth it is one of the easiest things to add to your diet that can really aid in your healing journey.
Like I said growing up we always had weird stuff simmering on our stove, and bone broth was on of those things. I literally grew up on this stuff! My chicken soup when I was sick, or just wanted soup, as a kid was very very rarely not homemade. BUT when I started and went to college my diet very quickly changed from what I was originally eating when I was living at home (as it so often does) and bone broth made a very quick exit out the door (along with a lot of other things) to make room for more “connivence” type foods.
Fast forward to being in my mid-twenties and being told that my hormones were completely out of wack!!!
After being chronically fatigued for about 2 years, with steady weight gain, some digestive issues and also what I called “a librarian” complexion I decided to haul my butt to a naturapath to get some testing done…..and basically was told that not only was I experiencing Adrenal Fatigue BUT my Thyroid Hormone was also pretty low (but not low enough for medication yet). After talking about different interventions, supplement and dietary, with my naturapath I went home put my nutritionists cap on and took a long hard look at my diet, lifestyle and the recommendations that were made! After lots of review, and also help from a friend, I realized that some of the biggest things that were lacking in my diet were foods loaded with thyroid nourishing minerals and healthy fats for building hormones.
My naturapath had suggested bone broth when we were discussing dietary ways to add more of these hormone building and nourishing minerals and fats into my diet. Aaand at first I dismissed it, BUT the more I got to thinking about it my nutrition training kicked in and I began to realized it really was everything I needed at the moment wrapped into one neat little package! Soooo I started researching recipes and trying to get creative in ways to use it, beyond just soup. This is when I came up with the recipe for my Pumpkin Spice Bone Broth Latte featured below (….and don’t worry it in no way tastes like bone broth, TRUST ME) as well as a few others. Getting creative with bone broth made it easier for me to make sure I was getting it on a regular basis which was what really started to help me heal.
Within a few months of having bone broth become a regular part of my diet I started to slowly realize that my I had more energy than before, and even better it was more stable from day to day (see before there were days when I literally felt like I could not get out of bed even if I tried). I was now able to make it through most days without feeling the afternoon “nod off” that I was experiencing before, and I was able to stay awake past 8:30pm. I also started to realizing….after it had been pointed out to me by a few different people…. that my skin had more of a healthy natural glow to it than it had in probably the last year! In simpler words I was feeling waaaayyy better!
Now I am not saying that I got better solely because of the bone broth. In fact it was only one of the handful of interventions I was using at that time. BUT that being said it has also been one of only interventions (diet wise) that I have consistently used since recovering in my day to day life to help keep my hormones in check! It’s just way to damn easy to incorporate seeing as there is so much you can do with it from soups/stews to cooking grains and even making lattes out of it! Plus it has a lot of other health benefits (beyond just hormone health) that can aid in any healing journey like:
Healing food intolerances and allergies by repairing your gut lining/leaky gut.
Joint health. Creates more fluid and lubricated joints.
Immune system boosting because of the rich minerals and antioxidants.
Skin health. Reduces the look if lines/wrinkles from both aging and cellulite. Increases the strength of nails and hair.
Pumpkin Spice Bone Broth Latte
8 oz Brewed Coffee of Choice (I love using my Mushroom Coffee Mix to add in some hormone balancing adaptogen’s)
4 oz of either Chicken Bone Broth OR a bone broth powder in hot water (in this recipe I usually just use the second option as its slightly easier to measure out in the morning)
1 tbsp Pumpkin Puree (not pumpkin pie mix, as this has A LOT of extra sugar in it)
1 tbsp Coconut Cream
1 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice (OR 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/4 cloves)
1 tsp Honey or Stevia Powder
Combine all ingredients in a high speed blender and blend for about 30-45 seconds, or until fully combined. Pour into your favourite mug, garnish with extra cinnamon (or pumpkin spice) and sip and enjoy!
